Vykintas Baltakas: Redditio 2 (2013) for woodwind quintet

The score uses a mixed notation, combining precise, graphical and aleatoric notation systems. The main motivation for doing so is to allow the musicians to react to the given moment and create their own authentic interpretation.

The tempi can range between 79 and 96 MM and can be changed during the piece. The notes of different sizes represent the different levels of importance in the hierarchy of the musical structure. The bigger notes (primary voice) are structurally more important than the smaller ones (secondary voice), which are often ornamentational.

In this hierarchy the performer is free to play with the sound and form, to search and improvise, to react to the context of the moment and the acoustics.

english My view of musical composition and conducting is one of reciprocity. I say that both as a composer or conductor "you can influence it, suggest ideas, give it direction, make decisions. You give impulses but you also receive impulses back from the music that you then process again and which then reflects back.” The dictionaries give these definitions of the Latin word redditio: ‘a performance of a musical composition or a dramatic role; the act of interpreting something as expressed in an artistic performance’. The starting-point or formal source for this new work was my "ri" for soprano and electronics. That composition has a very open musical structure and can be reinterpreted in very different ways. My works which followed ("RiRo" for soprano and trumpet, "Redditio" for ensemble) are not just arrangements, adaptation for different instruments; these are new (re)compositions, using the same starting-point and moving towards something new, specific to the new instrumentation. The approach is similar to the use of the classical sonata form in the 18th-19th century. Hence is the title: Redditio 2, a re-telling.

The score uses a mixed notation, combining precise, graphical and aleatoric notation systems. The main motivation for doing so is to allow the musicians to react to the given moment and create their own authentic interpretation.

lietuviškai Žodynuose pateikiamos šios lotyniškojo žodžio redditio interpretacijos: muzikos kūrinio ar vaidmens dramoje atlikimas; atlikimo veiksmas kaip meninio atlikimo išraiška. Išeities tašku tapo kompozicija RiRo (1995– 1999) sopranui ir trimitui. Kompozitorių domina atvira šio kūrinio struktūra, kurią tarsi tradicinę sonatos formą galima laisvai pritaikyti kitoms instrumentų grupėms, žaisti spalvomis ir instrumentų galimybėmis. Organiškai plėtojant pirminę idėją 2007 m. gimė Ri sopranui ir elektronikai, 2010 m. – Redditio instrumentiniam ansambliui, 2013 m. – Redditio 2 medinių pučiamųjų kvintetui. Tai nėra to paties kūrinio pritaikymas kitai sudėčiai, bet naujos kompozicijos radimosi procesas. Plečiant muzikos elementus (spalvą, harmoniją, erdvę) kūrinio struktūra nutolo nuo savo šaltinio ir tapo nauja mintimi.
