“Neon Sea” (2019) for flute, ensemble and electronics.

The composition balances between the animate and inanimate sound: a narrow tension area where death and life are hard to distinguish from one another. Neon is a chemical element, a colorless, odorless, inert monatomic noble gas - under standard conditions — with about two-thirds the density of air. The name neon is derived from the Greek word, νέος (neos), meaning new. The buzzing of a neon lamp is the starting point for this composition in which the live instruments unnoticeably take over.

This work was initiated by the flutist Karin de Fleyt. In the creative process the original idea — a solo work for flute and ensemble — transformed into one common flute-like colour, which is achieved through melting and morphing all instruments of the ensemble together: flute, clarinet, viola, cello and percussion. The ensemble here is seen as a spectrum of the solo instrument.
